On June 16, 2023, the Korean Geographical Society (President Jung Sung-hoon, Professor at Kangwon National University) and VANK (Director Park Ki-tae) signed an agreement to strengthen Korea’s geographical sovereignty, correct map-related misinformation, and enhance public awareness of geography’s importance.
Through this partnership, the two organizations will:
✅ Correct errors in Korean geographical information and place names in global knowledge sources (textbooks, maps, encyclopedias)
✅ Secure Korea’s presence in digital geographical spaces
✅ Expand Asia-centered geographical knowledge beyond Western-centric perspectives
✅ Promote the establishment of a national “Map Day” to highlight the importance of maps
Founded in 1945, the Korean Geographical Society leads Korea’s geography research through academic journals, conferences, and policy forums. It also focuses on key issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and digital geographic education.
VANK, established in 1999, has been actively correcting misinformation about Korea and promoting Korean culture worldwide. Since 2020, it has been leading a campaign to properly represent Korea’s maritime territory through accurate maps and geographical information.
President Jung Sung-hoon stated, “It is inspiring to collaborate with VANK, an organization driven by civic spirit and love for our country, to proactively safeguard Korea’s territorial and geographical sovereignty. The Korean Geographical Society will work with VANK to pioneer digital territorial expansion, innovate digital geography education, and create new job opportunities in this field.”
VANK Director Park Ki-tae added, “With the expertise, data, and 77 years of experience of the Korean Geographical Society, we aim to overcome the Western-centric geographical framework and expand Korea and Asia’s presence in global geography. We will also push forward efforts to establish Korea’s geographical sovereignty in advanced fields such as AI and the metaverse.”
Moving forward, VANK and the Korean Geographical Society will collaborate on securing Korea’s digital geographical sovereignty, promoting the ‘Map Day’ initiative, and ensuring accurate representation of Korea’s geography in global knowledge platforms.
